Press Release: Millennial Minds

Millennial Minds is a collaborative art installation in the York Minster Chapter House in late October. The event will provide a platform for Northern creativity and an open space to consider and destigmatise mental health. The first in a series of events over the coming year, this four-day long collaborative exhibition will feature pieces by students studying at Central Saint Martins, Ruskin School of Art, Leeds College of Art and the University of York. The event will raise funds for Mind, the UK’s leading mental health charity.

Millennial Minds is brought to you by The Northern Youth, an events committee comprised of young people living and studying in York. We are an off-shoot of the University of York’s arts, fashion, culture publication HARD Magazine and aim to uncover, cultivate and exhibit the artistic talent found in the North of England.

The millennial generation are facing a mental ill-health epidemic, yet the reasons for such a drastic rise in mental illness is not clear. Destigmatisation is the first step, and through this event we aim to confront and consider the overlooked issues surrounding mental health. By celebrating the wealth of creative talent in the north of England, the event will also provide a rare opportunity to branch out beyond the increasingly London-centric creative industries and encourage expression from students on both creative and mental health fronts.

The event is a collaboration with Illuminating York and will be held under the vaulted roof of the York Minster Chapter House. The unique 13th century building will provide an atmospheric architectural counterpoint to the installation. Every evening from the 26th-29th October, 5-10pm.

Building on the success of The Northern Youth’s debut event, a fashion show in York which raised £30,000 in aid of The Xavier Project and Refugee Action York, Millennial Minds is set to be an energising, thought-provoking event to raise awareness of a critical and overlooked subject. We’re putting issues that matter into the hands of those they affect.

Millennial Minds is taking place between the 26th-29th of October at 17:00-22:00. The Facebook page for the event is:
